Science in the City

Even the hot and humid Louisiana weather couldn't stop local scientists from gathering at the Louisiana boardwalk. This group represented everything from the very literal field of plant biology to the science of disease and how to make computer games, and we were there as participants in an outreach endeavor organized by Sciport: Louisana's Science Center, aptly titled Science in the City.

A few days before the event I was asked to appear on KTAL Studio 6 to talk a little bit about what this outreach means for us. So, sporting my children of the sorghum shirt, I arrived at KTAL and nervously waited with Tara Burton, the representative from SciPort, for our turn to interview. I haven't watched the video myself, but I was told I didn't totally blow it, and you can see it for yourself here:

We then worked over the next two days to prepare plant biology based activities to engage the public with concepts like the genetics of flowering, what's actually inside a plant cell, and whether or not we should be worried about GMOs. We even had a piranha plant powered by simple hydraulics to illustrate the role of turgor pressure in plant movement! Check out some pictures from our day below :)
