The CELLULAR (Centenary College and LSUHSC-S: Leaders for Undergraduate Learning and Research) student research program was approved first in Fall 2010.  This program allows natural science students at Centenary College to carry out research in laboratories at LSUHSC-S as part of an independent study course to earn credits toward graduation.  Additionally, this can count towards honors at graduation after the completion of departmental requirements.

As a participant in this program, students are paired with faculty mentors at LSUHSC-S and work onsite in their labs for up to 6 Independent Study credit hours in a Natural Science discipline during the summer or traditional semester.  Students will be trained such that they will be contributing to the research of the lab in which they are working.  This training in biomedical research is important and can be contributory to laboratories obtaining new funding or continuation funding for projects.   Faculty research interests include cancer biology, virology, immunology, neuroscience, and related fields.

For summer participants, Centenary housing is provided. Transportation is not currently available through Centenary.

Program Requirements:

1. Completion of at least three 200-level or above science courses with labs, not including BIOL 202.

2. A minimum GPA of 3.0 at the time of application.

3. Recommendation from three faculty, at least two from the sciences. (You do not need to ask for letters. Recommenders will receive an evaluation form.)

To apply, you will need the following materials:

1. A personal statement that describes your interest in research, what fields are most interesting to you, and your preparedness to complete a research project.

2. Current transcripts (unofficial is fine).

Your application will be reviewed by a committee of at least four natural science faculty before being recommended for placement.

*IMPORTANT*

The CELLULAR program is competitive, and it is a privilege to be placed into a mentor's laboratory. Before applying please consider the time commitment and whether or not you will realistically be able to maintain your work hours throughout the semester. Signing up for the program and then neglecting your obligations may result in a failing grade in your independent study course, and may be considered during pre-med or other evaluations. You may access the evaluation forms that will be used to assess your progress here
